Some people are lucky enough to have children who challenge very little and require little guidance or discipline. That was not my personal experience, nor is it the norm. Children can be challenging for so many reasons, and neighbors and friends have such different children their experiences often do not help us. My approach is to try to understand the specific needs of the child, the parent, the school, and the neighborhood so that guidance and discipline can be tailored to the specific situation. Difficulties in parenting are often not about being a “bad” parent but simply needing to be different in order to meet the specific needs of your child and his/her situation.
These are some of the problems I have helped parents/children with:
- sleep problems
- eating problems
- selective mutism
- anxiety
- depression
- ADHD
- discipline
- trauma
- adjustment to life changes (e.g. divorce, move, loss of parent)
